This week Max travelled to Campbelltown to visit with friends. On Wednesday he went to Stephanie's Child Care Centre. Max began his day by watching children play with playdough. He sat comfortably in the playdough stand.Max was then introduced to our class when all the children were on the mat. We read “Max the Monkey goes on an adventure”. Our clan really enjoyed this. One child even asked if Max was real, because the story told us he jumped so high. Everyone was happy to have Max involved in our day.
At group time Max listened to our book on “B” Bubble Bear. He listened to all the children find pictures in the book that started with the sound “b”. He also sat and watched the children perform an instrument march to the “Prehistoric Animal Brigade”.On Thursday Max went to Campbelltown College of TAFE and spent some time with big people in their class. It was an accounting class and pretty complicated. He knows that he will have to work hard at school so that he can go to TAFE one day. That night, Mrs S met Max and took him into Sydney.
On Friday, Max and Mrs. S got up very early. They walked past lots of tall buildings to the ABC building in Ultimo for the 4th Annual ABC Knit In.
Mrs. S explained to Max that people from around Australia knit or crochet squares. These squares are collected and sewn into wraps. The wraps are then given to charities or other organisations that send them around the world to give to people so they can keep warm. “Is it like the Social Justice Day I went to?” asked Max.
“Yes Max, it is similar. We should always help people” replied Mrs. S.
Mrs. S and Max then sat down with a group of ladies and men who were knitting. As Mrs. S introduced Max and herself to the group, Georgia, one of the ladies knitting recognised Mrs. S from High School over 30 years ago!! Mrs. S must be very old thought Max.
Max saw groups of school children walk into Studio 22 and begin knitting while other people sewed the square together into a wrap. Max joined in as well. Max heard that over 1000 people had come in to help knit and sew the squares.
During the Knit In, Simon Marnie, an ABC presenter, came over and talked to the group of people knitting. Max had his photo with Simon.
After the Knit In, Max saw some of his friends from Play School. Max wished them a very Happy 40th Birthday.
Max and Mrs. S then went up to the ABC library. The library has over 200,000 items for loan. The librarian showed him some of the 80,000 CDs in the library. She told Max that the 700 clients borrowed 34,000 CDs last year!!!Max and Mrs. S then walked towards Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. Max saw lots of very tall buildings. Mrs. S showed Max the round building that is called Australia Square. Max thought that was a bit strange!!
Max also saw lots of short, old building next to very tall, new buildings. Mrs. S explained that some of the old buildings were built a very long time ago. She showed Max “The Rocks” which is an area of Sydney where the book “Playing Beatie Bow” is set.
Max saw a strange looking boat on the water. Mrs. S explained that it was a water taxi. It is just like other taxis except it travels on water.“Can we go on a water taxi?” asked Max.
“No, but we can go on a bus”
Max and Mrs. S got on the bus and travelled up George Street, Sydney. Max saw lots of people walking on the footpath as well as taxis that drove on the road.“Can we go to the Knit In next year?” asked Max.
“I hope so Max. It would be fun to help. Did you know that anyone can knit and send them in to the Knit In? Perhaps you could get some of the children you meet to start knitting Max. Just remember that you need to knit 25cm squares.”
“I’ll try” replied Max. “Where am I going next week?” asked Max.
“You are going to the ACT to visit some children” replied Mrs. S.
