Max travels around Egypt - Part 5

Max got there really early and had photos taken in the dark. This photo was taken at Dawn, when the sun rises in the sky. Max likes the large statues of the Pharaoh Ramses II. He would like to be a Pharaoh too!




Max had a photo at the bottom of one of the statues of Ramses II and is very, very cold!!!


Max had a photo with a smaller statue – still being a camera hog!




When Max got back from Abu Simbel he was very tired and had a relaxing cruise on a felucca. It was fun and the boat went skimming through the water very fast!

Max left his boat on the Nile and caught another plane back to Cairo.


When Max went to his new room he was so exhausted he had to have a rest and a long drink. He was a very tired monkey.

Max travels around Egypt - Part 4

Max had to have another photo at the temple because he saw an interesting statue. He is such a camera ‘hog’!



Max went back to his ship the MS Stephanie and had a rest as he was cruising down the Nile. It had been a busy day!


Max loved looking at the banks of the Nile to see how fertile it was.




Max saw a boat on the Nile and was told it was called a felucca. He was going to go on one tomorrow and sail around an island called Elephantine Island. He was very excited but had to wait.



When on the boat the person who looked after his room used towels to make things. He made Max a monkey.




Max like the monkey so much that he had to have a photo with him. Max gave his friend a name – can you guess what the name was?

The next night there was a ‘Mummy’ in the room. It scared Max and Jenny when they went into their room. Jenny had a photo taken even though she was a bit scared. Max did not have his photo taken, he doesn’t like mummies. The ones he saw at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo were a bit scary to look at.



The next day was a big day, Max was going to see the Temple of Abu Simbel and had to catch an aeroplane at 4:30 am. It was very cold there and was 2 degrees Celsius.




The temple was carved out of the mountain for the Pharaoh Ramses II. It was dedicated to three Gods: Ra- Horakhty, Amun and Ptah.

Max travels around Egypt - Part 3

In the Valley of the Kings Max visited the famous tomb Of the Pharaoh Tutankhamen. This tomb has a number 62 on it and is spelt different. The 62 means it was the 62nd tomb found and there are sometimes more than 1 way to spell Egyptian names.
When Max visited the Egyptian museum in Cairo he saw sarcophagi (plural for more than one sarcophagus), masks, jewellery and gold as well a large range of other items that were buried with the Pharaohs to help them in their ‘after-life’.



After leaving the Valley of the Kings Max saw these 2 huge statues and had to stop for a look. They are called the Colossus of Memnon and are all that are left from another temple that was here a very long time ago.






Max was excited about how large they were and wanted to have a photo taken with one of them.





Next visit for Max was the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut. She is the only woman who became Pharaoh and pretended to be a male so that she could rule. She built this large temple which Max really liked.

Max had to stop on the way climbing the ramp to get to the top of the Temple. He is sitting here on the side of the ramp being careful not to fall.

When Max climbed to the top of the Temple he had to have a rest and leant against part of the Temple that had fallen over.

Max travels around Egypt - Part 2

In Egypt they had a lot of different Gods and Pharaohs. The Pharaohs built temples to worship their Gods and encouraged the people to pray there.



One of these temples was the temple of Horus who was the God of good. He is shown as an eagle and had a fight against another God who was evil. He won!!!




Max felt very brave and had a photo with the large statue of Horus!

Max liked Horus because he reminded him of a Falcon which is a bird. He remembered the nest with the eggs that he had seen at home and decided to have a ‘chat’ to Horus to tell him about the good children back home in Australia.

Jenny & Brian are the people who looked after Max on his trip. They made sure he kept warm and used his hat if it got sunny. They are standing outside the Temple at Luxor.

At another temple, the temple of Karnak, Max was taught how to read a cartouche. This has the shape of an oval which has the Pharaoh’s name written in hieroglyphics inside. The closed shape meant that the Pharaoh would live forever. Can you work out what name the cartouche has inside?

Next Max went to the Valley of the Kings. In this valley there a large number of Pharaohs buried in large tombs built into the sides of the mountains.

Max travels around Egypt

Max had a long plane trip to get to Egypt. First he flew to Kuala Lumper in Malaysia and had a chance to stretch his legs. Then he hopped on another plane and stopped at Bahrain. After this he hopped onto another plane to fly to Cairo, the capital of Egypt. He was travelling for 24 hours – 1 day and was very tired!

In Egypt it was winter and Max was glad that he brought his warm blue jacket with his hood. He really needed it.




His first sight was the Pyramids of Giza. He saw them from the bus on the way to his hotel and he could see them at his hotel – Mena House. There were three pyramids and were built for the Pharaohs.




The pyramids were very large with each stone being a lot taller than Max.

Max tried to climb the Pyramid but had to have a rest. He was a bit scared he might fall and they were too big to climb.



Near the Pyramids was something called the Sphinx. It was GIGANTIC! It had the head of a Pharaoh and the body of a lion. It was carved out of one large piece of rock that they found when building the Pyramids.
