Max in East Timor - Houses (Part 2)

Max's house in Bau Cau

Here is the house that Max and Erika lived in Baucau. Baucau is a big town built in the mountains where there are lots of rocks so here houses are made of rocks cemented together.

This is the kitchen. There is a gas bottle for cooking and water is kept in the white mandi. (A Mandi is a big plastic container for water.) There is a pink scoop on top of the mandi. Every day Max and Erika carried buckets of water from the water tank outside and filled up the mandi in the kitchen. They used the water from the mandi for cooking, washing, bathing etc.

There is a kitchen bench where they prepared meals and the kitchen drawers where all the plates, cups and cutlery are kept. They went shopping everyday to the market to buy fresh vegetables.

This family in Bau Cau is renovating their house. All the family is helping to paint the walls a bright yellow.

Max's House in Same

In Same, Max and Erika lived in a guest house which is like a little hotel.

This is where they slept. The mosquito net stopped mosquitos and bugs biting them while they slept. There’s a red torch on the bed because there’s not much electricity in Same. Usually Max and Erika used candles and saved the torch batteries for emergencies.

Here is the hotel kitchen. The kitchen was outside at the back of the house. It was built from two sheets of corrugated iron. There is a fire and a wooden bench in the kitchen. Max and Erika were so glad they didn’t have to cook. Every day Marcy the cook, steamed rice and made delicious stir fry’s in her wok and sometimes she made stews in the big pot. The kitchen fire was lit first thing in the morning when at sun rose at 6.00 am and was kept burning until dinner was cooked at night.
